A double-height entry at Hope Island was built around a sweeping brushbox staircase - the first thing you see walking in. Years of foot traffic had worn the nosings dull and scuffed, and it no longer matched the freshly-coated floors.
Stairs are hand work: we machine-sanded the treads flat where we could and cut in every riser, nosing and stringer by hand. A couple of worn nosing edges were filled and rebuilt, and two squeaky treads re-fixed from below.
They wanted the staircase to be a showpiece, so we finished it in a solvent polyurethane at gloss - the richest, hardest-wearing coat for a high-traffic feature. The warm amber of the solvent coat suits the brushbox beautifully.
The staircase now gleams under the entry skylight and flows straight into the matching floors. Sealed and built up over two days plus drying - and tough enough for the busiest part of the house.

“The staircase is a showstopper now. Everyone comments on it the second they walk in.” - The Nguyens, Hope Island
