A big spotted gum entertaining deck at Currumbin had gone silver-grey and splintery after years of beachside sun and salt. The owners hosted on it constantly and wanted it safe underfoot and rich again before summer.
We stripped the failed old coating and sanded back through the grey weathered layer to fresh, honey-coloured timber. A couple of cupped boards were replaced and every lifting fixing re-set so there were no trip hazards or proud screws.
Outdoors we always reach for a penetrating oil over a film finish - it moves with the timber and wears gradually instead of cracking and peeling. We soaked the deck in a natural hard-wax oil and wiped it back, two coats, for a warm low-sheen that won’t flake.
The spotted gum came back to life - deep, warm and smooth underfoot. We left the owners with a simple re-oil routine so a quick maintenance coat each year keeps it looking like this. Two and a half days on the tools.
