A Tweed Heads home had pale Tasmanian oak stairs that felt dated against a renovated dark-floored interior. They wanted them restained a deep walnut to match the new look and tie the level change together.
A colour change like this means going right back to raw timber - any old coat left behind blocks the stain. We sanded every tread, riser and the handrail back to bare oak, fixed a worn nosing and quietened a squeak before colour went near it.
Tasmanian oak takes stain evenly, which is why it’s a great base for a dramatic colour. We worked a walnut stain in by hand, checked it in daylight, then sealed and built up two clear coats at satin to protect the colour from foot traffic.
The stairs now read a rich, even walnut that flows straight into the dark floors below - a completely different staircase. Sanded, stained and coated over two days plus drying between coats.
